Abstract: Stemming from an email exchange, this analysis of O Sonno by Cipriano de Rore is based on an affective reading of its text. The investigation focusses on Cypriano’s use of melodic intervals, modal ambiguity, and specific sonic structures to reflect the vacillating, fast-changing affects of an insomniac wrangling with his inability to sleep. With reference to recent analytical interpretations of this outstanding piece, it demonstrates how a strictly linear analytical approach to polyphony brings new insight into the compositional process in a way that is profitable not only for theorists; as an ‘analysis for performers’ it opens new perspectives on content-related aspects of madrigal composition around 1550.
